Well, we did it. The SBS-BA Cycle Safari Team completed another Gong Ride in fine form. Sydney's weather was a pearler with the temperature peaking at 32c during the day. While there were some aching legs at the finish line, on the whole the team pulled up well. We'd like to thank all our supporters and sponsors for putting their dollars behind us in this year's ride. We're just slightly shy of our target, so if you haven't yet donated, we'd love your support.
We look forward to doing it all again next year, only bigger and better!

Well, here we are. Today is the big day.
The 94 riders of SBS-BA Cycle Safari will all be descending on the starting line for either a 90km or 58km (this is the short course) ride from Sydney to Wollongong. Having just flicked over to the weather channel, we're looking at a day that will top about 28c degrees, so it'll be really important that everyone hydrates.
If you're not riding and are just logging on to this page to support a friend, please dig deep. This is an amazing cause and one that affects so many people. This is your opportunity to give to a cause that is very worthy of your support.

Put your hand up if you're panicking that:
- You haven't trained (enough/at all)
- You're worried about getting through the event?
- You're bottom isn't going to stand up to the rigours of the day?
RELAX!!!!!!!
There are measures that you can start putting in place to minimise
the panic.
- Read Tip 1 and 2 - some good stuff there :-)
- Drink water. Hydrate now before the day
- Mental preparation. If your head's ready, your body will follow. Start some positive mantras:
- I can do this
- Each turn of the pedal will get me a little bit closer
- The scenery will be amazing
- If X (insert name of person) can do it, so can I!
- If you haven't already, buy some padded bike shorts (knicks). Get some chamois cream/Bepanthen/Lanolin and (on the
day) apply to the padding. Sounds weird, but out of all the tips on comfort, follow this one. You will appreciate it... - It's NOT a race; enjoy yourself
- Look at the weather forecast and dress appropriately. If it's going to be wet, take a rain jacket. Hypothermia sucks (been there, done that - got the blanket to prove it)
- Be Careful - There are a few tricky descents. If you dip out of your comfort zone, you may crash and that will hurt!!!!
- Stop at the water points along the course, drink what's in your bottles, fill up and keep on truckin'
- Smile; you're helping a great cause, plus doing something unique.

On the recent long weekend, I rode the Gong course.
I thought I would share some insights of the course itself
which will hopefully add some benefit for people on the day.
- The ride out of town.
The course winds its way from St.Peters along the highway then along the beach at Brighton. The road is flat
here, but beware the first 4km; the road surface is rather sketchy, with potholes and other detritus. You will also be with 100's of other cyclists. Help yourself (and them) by calling out the following:
"Hole left" "Hole right" "Glass" "Fast rider on your right"
From Brighton the road starts a gradual climb all the way to Waterfall. The road conditions are better, and you
will have a lot more room to move. You dip down at Sutherland, and then have a "nice" little climb to Engadine. Don't race up this first climb; you've still got a fair way to go.
- Waterfall to Stanwell Tops
I regard this section as being one of the prettiest parts of the course. You descend past MASSIVE trees and ferns. It's a beautiful ride I do most weekends. CAREFUL: There are some tricky corners, and on a misty day, these corners are very slippery.
At the bottom you turn right, and for the next 10km, another gradual climb out of the park. Set yourself into a solid
(a little bit harder than comfortable) rhythm and look at the scenery!!! There are 2 little steep pinches, with the last being about 500m from Otley Pie Shop. If you can stop here briefly, as there is a steep 300m pinch past the Pie Shop and you'll need to get a run up at it.
- Stanwell Tops to Bulli
At Stanwell Tops you will see Wollongong and start descending down Bald Hill.
EXTREMELY DANGEROUS DESCENT!!!!!!!
I have seen many people crash on this hill over the years. BE CAREFUL!!!!
Clifton has a NASTY climb but it looks a LOT worse than it appears. Put your head down, and POWER up the climb...
- Bulli - Gong
The home stretch. You will have a couple of rises to get over, and then it's all flat for the last 10-15k. Assuming
you've been eating and drinking this will be an easy piece. SMILE WHEN YOU GET INTO THE FINISH!
In regards to what to eat during the event, here is what I recommend:
- Try to consume approx. 60-80g of carbs an hour. Ideally aim for 100g
- Drink a bottle every hour
I do find it difficult to eat enough when riding. I personally use products from Torq (http://www.torqaustralia.com.au )which allow me to mix my bottles with a powder that contains the right amount of carbohydrates, and I also use energy gels to bump the amount up. On a recent 160km RACE, this combination helped me stay with the the leaders for 115km, and break my PB for the event by nearly 40minutes.
At a minimum I would recommend using a product such as Gatorade, Powerade to replace some of what you sweat out rather than straight water.

Hi all,
Welcome to the first of a series of tips to help you get prepared for the Sydney Gong ride.
A number of people have already asked me various questions about the ride:
Realistically, how long should it take me to ride?
Is it hilly?
What sort of training should I be doing?
Do I need to buy a new bike?
Do I REALLY have to wear lycra?
Over the upcoming weeks I’ll address these questions (plus more). The most important thing about the event is not how fast you rode, how much your bike is worth, it’s about participation, enjoying the ride, and raising much needed money for MS.
With the weather improving and daylight getting longer, you should have started training.
If not, don’t worry. Here is a couple of tips to get you started:
1. Pull the bike out of the shed (where it could have been sitting for a while over winter), dust off the cobwebs and take it to a bike shop for a quick checkup. Don’t do it yourself (unlike the person in the picture who tried to fix an annoying squeak). Safety should always be first.
2. For the first couple of rides, find somewhere safe and relatively car-free. Centennial Park and Homebush are good choices. Aim to ride for about 45-60 minutes, and don’t worry about what speed you should be going. Just get on the bike and ride. When you’ve finished, stop for a coffee (all good rides have a coffee stop…..)
For now, that should get you started. Next tip I’ll run through tips about clothing and being comfortable on the bike.

SBS Managing Director Michael Ebeid has risen to the challenge and signed up for the 2011 MS Sydney to the Gong Ride, as part of the SBS-BA Cycle Safari Team. This will be the first time Michael has taken on the challenge of the 90km ride to support the MS cause.
Michael said, "Raising the awareness of causes like MS, which affects so many people is really important. I'm looking forward to joining the SBS/BA team in getting out there and to show my support and raise some well needed funds for the cause. I'm not a regular cyclist, so I hope the first aid van stays close behind me."
Michael will join Broadcast Australia's CEO Graeme Barclay in the event, which sees SBS and Broadcast Australia field the event's largest team to date, with 87 riders.

Well, most of our team should now be well and truly registered, which is an awesome start!
Now down to the two big tasks - getting into training for this mammoth event, and fundraising, fundraising, fundraising... is that 4 things?
Anyway, over the coming three months SBS's own Rick Jordan has agreed to update this page to give some tips and hints to our keen riders to make the event an enjoyable experience. I think I should be adding an asterisk to that sentence, because I personally think that "conditions apply" to that statement :)
We're so truly proud of every person who has signed up for this event, not only because you're now going to challenge yourself, but you're doing it for an AWESOME cause - MS!
There's a couple of our team mates who are currently sitting on $0, so if you're reading this page as a supporter, please consider pledging some dollars to this worthy cause. It's not important who you support, but to support the cause itself.

Broadcast Australia Group CEO, Graeme Barclay, has signed up to take part in the 2011 MS Sydney to the Gong ride as part of the SBS-BA Cycle Safari Team.
The recreational cyclist, who supported the cause last year, will don his bike pants on 6 November to cycle the 90kms and raise vital funds for MS Australia.
Graeme is putting the challenge out to other CEOs to become involved and support the cause.

Well, the term 'hitting the ground running' might not be the right term for a cycling team, but you know what I mean. Yes, once again SBS and Broadcast Australia staff have joined forces to raise some much needed dollars for MS Australia. We're only on day 2 of fundraising and have already passed the $2000 mark.
Last year we had just under 60 riders and we raised around $35,000, this year, we're looking to boost the team size and the dollars raised.
There are two types of people riding with us this year - people who have a passion for riding and people who have a passion for the cause. Whatever the reason they're taking part, I hope that you back them up with your support and hard earned dollars.
